A man in his 50s died after getting into difficulty while swimming in
the sea off West Waterford on Friday afternoon.
The man was recovered from the water by the crew of Youghal RNLI and was
pronounced dead a short time later.
The alarm was raised just after 4pm that a swimmer had gone missing in
the Caliso Bay area, between Youghal and Whiting Bay.
The inshore lifeboat in Youghal was tasked and was launched within seven
minutes of the call coming in.
The crew raced to the area and were on scene by 4.20pm.
Crew Members quickly spotted the casualty relatively close to the shore.
The Casualty was taken onto the life boat and the crew immediately began CPR
and give first aid.
An ambulance was requested and was waiting when the lifeboat returned to
its base.
A doctor and paramedics began to work on the casualty after it was
handed over to them, but the man was pronounced dead by the Doctor a short time
later.
The man’s remains were brought to Cork University Hospital for a post mortem
examination to take place and to establish the exact cause of the man’s death.
The sea was described as been quite choppy at the time with a fresh
south-easterly wind.
